‘Random Female Skate Boarder’ mural turns Miri skate park into new tourist hotspot

MIRI, July 28: The Skate Park Roundabout at Taman Bulatan Miri now sports a fresh new look with a three-dimensional (3D) floor mural titled ‘Random Female Skate Boarder’, a street art piece by local artist Kong Chak Kiong, better known as ‘Jagung’.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, the mural is expected to become one of Miri’s new creative tourism icons.
The artwork was chosen through a public voting process held in April, securing the highest votes to beat out other designs.

Work on the mural started on April 16 and was completed this month, representing another successful public art project made possible through collaboration between the community and the private sector.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said the mural holds added significance because the people of Miri chose its design.

“It reflects the spirit and creativity of our youth and stands as a symbol of pride for the local community,” he said during a site visit.
Meanwhile, Ting, who also serves as the assemblyman for Piasau, revealed that plans are underway to upgrade the Skate Park Roundabout with new facilities, including jogging tracks, basketball courts, skateboarding areas, cycling zones, and inclusive play spaces.

The mural was created in collaboration with the Shin Yang Group, which fully sponsored its construction through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
