4 Malaysian Contestants Advance in ‘The Voice of the Middle-aged 4’; Yu Shu Qing Seen as Championship Favourite

The Top 20 list for TVB’s singing reality show ‘The Voice of the Middle-aged 4’ has been announced, with Malaysians Yu Shu Qing, Xu Yun Ni, Yin Jing Shun, and Zheng Zhong Hao successfully advancing. When the four were interviewed by Malaysian media on Thursday, they all expressed being “very happy, very excited.” When asked who they thought had the best chance of going further in the competition, Xu Yun Ni, Yin Jing Shun, and Zheng Zhong Hao unanimously named front-runner Yu Shu Qing, believing she has a good shot at making it into the top three.

Xu Yun Ni admitted that she was certainly happy to advance, but the pressure also followed. “The judges have different standards, and the remaining contestants are all very strong.” She joked that Yu Shu Qing is a formidable opponent—“she’s won many championships”—but also expressed confidence in herself: “I think I’m a well-prepared artist.” When it came to the question of who would win, she candidly said: “Of course it should be me, otherwise why would I join?” However, she also takes victory and defeat rationally, believing that the key still lies in the judges’ tastes and the live performance state.

Yin Jing Shun described his feelings at this stage as “happy but not daring to relax.” He pointed out that the gap between contestants is not large: “If your condition is off or you’re not fully prepared, you could be eliminated at any time,” so he is focusing more on stabilizing each performance. Zheng Zhong Hao also admitted that he is not a typical competition-oriented singer, but having made it this far, he has started to set his sights on the prize: “Might as well aim for the championship this time.” He added that remembering lyrics and the constant commuting have actually been the biggest challenges each round: “Anyone with a family would know—it’s about balancing career and family.”

Currently in Hong Kong and interviewed via video call, Yu Shu Qing described this journey as “full of trepidation, but also quite incredible.” “In the beginning, I kept testing if my singing style was suitable for this stage—didn’t expect to come this far.” She said she will continue to work hard and embrace the upcoming challenges.

As for their next goals, Xu Yun Ni was clear about her direction, saying she hopes to first make the top 10, then advance to the finals, and ultimately stand on the Kai Tak stage. Yin Jing Shun, on the other hand, chooses to take things naturally and hopes to go further step by step. Zheng Zhong Hao’s goal is to reach the finals, adding with a smile that he hopes to bring his daughter to Hong Kong then and finally fulfill her long-awaited wish of visiting Disneyland. Yu Shu Qing stated directly that she wants to make it into the top five or even win the championship—“I want to bring glory to Malaysia”—but also emphasized that winning is not the only important thing; “what’s more important is to keep pushing myself to break through and do my best in every challenge.”

Even though she’s considered a strong contender for the top three, Yu Shu Qing remains humble, saying there are no absolute opponents in the competition: “Everyone has their strengths. The key is still live performance and a bit of luck.” She also admits that her advantage lies in stage experience and ability to control the crowd, but facing strong competitors she “doesn’t dare to relax,” and can only “give it my all in every round.”

In addition, both Xu Yun Ni and Yu Shu Qing, who have families and children, mentioned that frequently traveling between Hong Kong and Malaysia and balancing family with the competition is currently one of the biggest challenges. “Stamina is really important. If something happens to your health, all your preparations go to waste.” Therefore, they both strive to maintain their best condition to face the tough matches ahead.
