(Seria, 9th July) Seria Chung Hwa Middle School excelled at the “Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Awards Presentation Ceremony”, held in grand fashion on July 2, 2025, at the Brunei International Convention Centre. The school clinched both the championship in the ‘Junior Smart Innovators’ category and the ‘Special Award for Sustainable Energy’, showcasing outstanding capabilities in technological innovation and environmental awareness among its faculty and students. The “Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement Award” (CIPTA), organized by Universiti Teknologi Brunei and co-sponsored by Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd (BLNG), has been held biennially since 2005 and has become one of the most influential platforms for innovation and invention in Brunei and the ASEAN region.
This year’s competition adopted the theme “Bridging Innovators, Industries and Institutions”, emphasizing the advancement of creative breakthroughs from campus to society in an era of rapid technological development, and encouraging youth to collaborate with professional organizations and industry to develop solutions that align with national progress and the global sustainability agenda. This year, a total of 97 entries from Brunei and ASEAN countries participated, with 73 entries advancing to the finals. The projects covered fields such as green energy, biodegradable materials, smart technologies, and the circular economy, resonating with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on climate action, clean energy, and responsible consumption.
The participating team from Seria Chung Hwa Middle School comprised three students: Xing Xiongwen (9Z), Ji Ya (9X), and He Xuanyi (9X), under the guidance of teacher Mr. Mi Nu. Their innovative invention, integrating green energy and practical technology, demonstrated exceptional problem-solving capabilities and creative thinking, enabling them to stand out amidst fierce competition and win both the ‘Junior Smart Innovators’ championship and, for the first time, the newly established ‘Special Award for Sustainable Energy.' Both awards included cash prizes, trophies, medals, and certificates, which are a strong recognition of their efforts and talents. The Junior Smart Innovators category is set up especially for local students in lower secondary (Years 7-9), aiming to encourage them to propose creative technological solutions to real-world problems and inspire interest and passion for engineering and invention.
This year’s awards ceremony was officiated by the Crown Prince, who is also the Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei, Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. He personally presented the awards, reflecting the nation’s emphasis on and encouragement of youth innovation education. At the post-competition seminar held on July 7, the winning team, together with other outstanding participants, presented their projects and shared their research ideas and technical insights, providing Brunei’s education sector and young innovators with a valuable platform for exchange and inspiration.
Dr. Zhang Guijuan, Principal of Seria Chung Hwa Middle School, said in a post-event interview: “I am extremely proud of the outstanding performance of our three students. They have not only shown great passion for technology but also deep concern for environmental issues. Their innovative outcomes are not only a glory for our school but also a beacon of hope for the nation’s future. Our school will continue to offer diverse learning platforms, encouraging students to embrace exploration, dare to experiment, and ignite the future with innovation.” She also expressed special thanks to guiding teacher Mr. Mi Nu for his patient guidance, as well as to parents and the entire school team for their full support and companionship.
The exceptional results achieved by Seria Chung Hwa Middle School at the 2025 CIPTA Awards once again demonstrate the school’s steady progress in the fields of science and environmental education, and its ongoing commitment to nurturing future talents who possess a global perspective and creative potential for the nation.
