(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) The Royal Brunei Police Force has issued a statement regarding a text message circulating on social media, which claims that the Land Transport Department (JPD) is responsible for traffic fines and requests payment through a specific website link allegedly belonging to the JPD.
“The Land Transport Department has confirmed through its official social media channels that this text message is a forged message and a form of online scam. Subsequently, the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department has launched an investigation into the case and has notified the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) to shut down the website so that the public can no longer access it.”
Police remind the public that the Traffic Control Investigation Department (Jabatan Siasatan Kawalan Lalulintas) does not use the JPD platform or website for fine payments. Any payment transaction is only conducted through the following methods: the Traffic Control Investigation Department will contact the relevant individual by phone or receive payment at the police counter in cash or by debit/credit card, and online payments are only made through the BIBD application.
The police urge the public to always remain vigilant, never trust suspicious messages or links, and ensure the authenticity of information before taking any action. Community cooperation is vital in combating scams and avoiding becoming victims of online fraud syndicates.
