(Jakarta, 27th - Comprehensive Report) Indonesia has provided the Fijian government with a total aid of $6 million (approximately MYR 26.24 million), a move that is expected to help the Pacific island nation address its national debt issues.
“We are very grateful for this aid valued at FJD 12 million (approximately USD 6 million),” Fijian Prime Minister Rabuka said during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo after a bilateral meeting at the Jakarta Presidential Palace on Thursday. “We are no longer burdened by debt, and we express our sincerest gratitude to you and your government.”
Rabuka emphasized that Indonesia has been a trusted partner and friend of Fiji since 1974 and thanked President Prabowo for his warm welcome to him and his delegation.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo expressed his honor in hosting Prime Minister Rabuka and his delegation, welcoming them on a state visit to Indonesia.
“I am very honored to meet with you today. As I said before, I remember you and your history,” Prabowo said to Rabuka.
“However, I am a bit puzzled because the last time we met, you had a big beard,” Prabowo humorously remarked, causing Rabuka and his delegation to burst into laughter.
Prabowo emphasized that the Fijian Prime Minister's first visit to Indonesia marks the strengthening bilateral relationship over the past 50 years. He noted that Fiji has become an important partner for Indonesia in the Pacific region, highlighting the shared archipelago identity of the two countries, and their alignment on strategic priorities and regional challenges. Indonesia and Fiji uphold the principles of mutual respect between nations, including sovereignty, independence, and equal rights.
During the bilateral meeting, the leaders of both countries pledged to strengthen cooperation in areas including politics, defense, and economy. Prabowo invited Fiji to participate in joint military exercises held in Indonesia as part of bilateral defense cooperation. Prabowo also encouraged Fiji to send youth to study in Indonesia.
