France Announces First Batch of New Government Members

On the 5th, the French Presidential Palace announced the first batch of members for the new government, with several key ministerial positions retained while positions such as Minister of Defense and Minister of Economy and Finance saw new appointments. The list of other members of the new government will be announced in the coming days.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on September 8, due to controversy and opposition arising from the 2026 fiscal budget draft focused on financial austerity, then-Prime Minister Bérou failed the confidence vote in the National Assembly and was forced to resign. The fiscal budget draft was also shelved. The next day, then-Minister of Defense Lecornu was appointed as the new Prime Minister by Macron.

On the evening of the 5th, Presidential Secretary-General Moulin announced that, upon the recommendation of the new Prime Minister Lecornu, President Macron appointed 18 government members, including 16 ministers and 2 ministers delegate.

According to this appointment, several important ministerial positions have been retained, including Minister of the Interior Le Taïe, Minister of Foreign Affairs Barrault, and Minister of Justice Darmanin.

In addition, Le Maire was appointed Minister of Defense, succeeding Lecornu who has been promoted to Prime Minister; Lescure was appointed as Minister of Economy and Finance.

After the announcement of the first batch of members of the new government, Bardella, leader of the far-right party National Rally, and Mélenchon, leader of the far-left party France Unbowed, both posted on social media, criticizing the new government members as merely a "continuation" of the old government without substantive change.
