(Kuala Belait, 22nd) The Kuala Belait Fuzhou Association held its Filial Piety Dinner last night at the association’s hall, creating a heartwarming and touching atmosphere.
Chairman Hwang Lin Ming stated in his speech, "No matter how hard we work, without your support and participation, whatever we do would only be the excitement of a few." He said emotionally, “It’s precisely because of your presence that tonight’s banquet truly has value and warmth. As I always say: 'Shared joy is doubled, shared burdens are halved.'”
He pointed out that the original intention behind holding the Filial Piety Festival is to create a big family atmosphere full of love. “We sincerely hope that every time you enter the association, you will feel a sense of closeness and familiarity, just like returning to the embrace of ‘home’, perhaps even smelling the aroma of mom’s cooking.”
Chairman Hwang emphasized, “Maybe everyone has a different feeling toward the ‘association’, but as a leadership team, we always hold fast to the same direction: that this place becomes a warm second home in your hearts.”
In his speech, Chairman Hwang also shared two of Bai Juyi’s poems he read during his student days—“The Filial Crow’s Night Lament” and “The Swallow’s Song”—and recited them word-for-word, leading the guests to experience the emotions within the poems together:
“The Filial Crow’s Night Lament” describes a crow who lost its mother and keeps vigil over its old woods, crying every night as it regrets not being able to repay its mother’s care. The line, “In its cries as if to say, a heart longing to return the favor not yet fulfilled,” has left a deep impression on his mind.
“The Swallow’s Song” vividly depicts the hardships parents endure to raise their children. The swallows build nests, raise their young, flying back and forth to feed them, and when the fledglings are grown and take flight, they never return. In the empty nest, the parents cry throughout the night, deeply moving the reader.
He said, “These verses made me realize that filial piety is not just cultural inheritance but the truest affection in the world. Especially as mentioned in the Ten Commandments of the Bible: ‘Honor your father and mother.’ ‘Honor’ is a step higher than ‘obey’; it is not just an expression of emotion but also a responsibility and an action.”
He spoke earnestly, “I dare not say that caring for elderly parents is always a pleasure—after all, as the saying goes, ‘No filial child by the sickbed of a long-ill parent’ reflects the hardest realities. But we must remember: caring for our parents is our duty and our blessing as children. Don’t forget, we shared our first ten months of heartbeat with our mothers in the womb—that was our very first home in life.”
