BARAM: A RM51 million water treatment and supply project in Tutoh, here is slated to be completed by next year, promising cleaner and more reliable access to water for rural communities here.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the initiative reflected the state government’s strong commitment to improving basic infrastructure in the interior.

He noted that the Highland Development Agency (HDA) had already been allocated RM1.5 billion for road connectivity and clean water projects in Baram.

“These projects are designed to change lives for the better,” he said when officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday (Oct 3).

Gerawat, who is the Mulu assemblyman, called on community leaders and villagers to extend their cooperation in determining the site for the new water treatment plant, stressing that such support was vital to avoid delays or disputes.

Implemented by HDA through contractor BWS Engineering Sdn Bhd, the project will serve several longhouses and villages including Kampung Long Terawan, Long Ukok, Kuala Tutoh, Rumah Asong, Rumah Anthony, Rumah Rok and Rumah Lajang.

When completed, the system will be capable of supplying around 600 litres of treated water per household room each month.

The water project will be followed by another major undertaking — the groundbreaking of the 3M 2L Road Project on Nov 15, 2025.

The new road will link Miri, Marudi, Mulu and Long Panai to Long Lama, eventually connecting with the Sabah Sarawak Link Road 2 (SSLR2).
