(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) To celebrate the 249th anniversary of American Independence, the U.S. Embassy in Brunei held a unique “American-Style Backyard Barbecue Party” the night before last at the Ambassador’s residence on Ambassador Road. The event offered a relaxed and lively atmosphere, full of friendship and joy.
Minister of Home Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin, was invited as the Guest of Honor. The event was attended by a congregation of guests, including several government officials, business leaders, and representatives from civil organizations, showcasing the extensive and positive interaction woven into the bilateral relations between the U.S. and Brunei.
U.S. Ambassador to Brunei, Caryn McClelland, stated in her speech that the “backyard barbecue” is not only an American family tradition for the summer but also an important cultural symbol representing unity, partnership, and connection.
She pointed out that U.S.-Brunei relations have continued to deepen in recent years, especially in key areas such as trade, investment, and defense security, reflecting a strong and active strategic partnership between the two countries.
“The Ambassador noted that last year’s Independence Day celebration also marked the important 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Brunei. Over the past 40 years, the two countries have continuously advanced common goals based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation, and the relationship has grown ever closer.”
She specifically mentioned that U.S.-Brunei relations can be traced back to June 23, 1850, when the two sides signed the “Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation.” “This historic agreement laid a solid foundation for our present-day cooperation.”
The evening’s event concluded successfully amidst delicious food, lively conversations, and peals of laughter, symbolizing the continued steady progress of friendship between the two countries in the spirit of sincerity and cooperation.
