(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) The Weights and Measures Unit under the Authority for Industrial and Commercial Ecosystem (JPES) of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, jointly with the Consumer Affairs Department (CAD) of the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES), recently conducted joint enforcement operations at several commercial establishments in Tutong District.

This operation is part of routine enforcement procedures aimed at ensuring that all weighing and measuring devices used for commercial transactions are registered and verified in accordance with the requirements under Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act (1983). At the same time, monitoring was carried out under Chapter 142 of the Price Control Act and its related regulations to ensure that all controlled goods do not exceed the statutory price ceiling and that prices are displayed clearly and accurately, in order to protect consumer rights.

During the inspection, enforcement officers inspected a total of 18 electronic scales and weighing devices used for transactions; all devices were registered and calibrated as required by Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act (1983) and Clauses (1) & (2) of Chapter 3 of the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations (1994), and met the standards.

However, officers also discovered two violations of the Price Control Act. One supermarket was fined BND 500 for failure to clearly and accurately display the prices of items for sale; another violation involved breaching the formula milk price ceiling, for which the business received a warning notice.

The authorities reminded consumers to ensure that any weighing, volume, or length measuring device used in transactions bears a valid registration label issued by the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT). Retailers are also required to strictly comply with the Price Control Act to ensure that controlled items sold do not exceed the statutory maximum price and that prices are clearly displayed.

The list of maximum prices for controlled goods is available at the Consumer Affairs Department website: www.deps.mofe.gov.bn/cad.
