KUCHING: Construction of a new Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) in Miri has commenced, marking another milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to expand access to international-standard education across the state.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project, located in the Bekenu-Beraya area, is already under construction with the tender process completed.
“It is currently under construction. In Miri, it will be located somewhere in the Bekenu-Beraya area.
“Construction has already started and the tender has been awarded,” he told reporters after officiating the opening of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School Kuching here today (Jan 31).
He added that a similar development is planned for Bintulu as part of Sarawak’s broader education expansion programme.
“The same applies to Bintulu, and then we will have five international schools (YSISS),” he said.
Previously, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said Sarawak would build three new international secondary schools under the Sarawak Foundation over the next two years.
He said the schools in Miri and Bintulu are scheduled for completion by 2027.
“We now have two YSISS in Kuching and Petra Jaya. These international schools produce high-quality students, particularly in science and technology subjects.
“That is why we are building more throughout the state,” he was quoted as saying at an education event in Kuching last year.
