(Kuala Lumpur, 21st) As the ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will convene an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting tomorrow (22nd) regarding the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement today noting that the meeting, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, will take place in accordance with the agreement reached by the Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand on the 11th of this month.
The statement noted that the meeting will be chaired by Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan, and will provide a platform for ASEAN foreign ministers to exchange views on the situation in Cambodia and Thailand. The ministers will also discuss what measures ASEAN can take to support efforts by Cambodia and Thailand to alleviate tensions, cease hostilities, and maintain peace and stability between the two countries as well as the region as a whole.
The statement pointed out that this special meeting demonstrates ASEAN’s commitment to fostering unity and harmony within ASEAN, and upholding its pledge to ensure regional peace, stability, and prosperity, in line with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that as the ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will continue to play a constructive role based on the spirit of ASEAN, promote dialogue, and in the process, assist both parties in adhering to international legal principles, good neighborly relations, peaceful coexistence, and bilateral and multilateral cooperation, with the aim of achieving a peaceful, just, and lasting solution to any disputes.
