(Kuching, 19th) — Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian announced that, with approval from the Premier, the monthly allowance for local councillors will be raised from RM300 to RM1,000, along with enjoying RM1,000 of annual medical benefits.
He believes this move will greatly motivate local councillors to contribute more actively to Sarawak’s development.
During the ministry’s summary, Dr Sim stated that under the 12th Malaysia Plan, the ministry allocated RM382.92 million to local authorities, completing 206 projects.
Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the ministry also received a maximum allocation of RM571.29 million, of which RM150.76 million has already been disbursed this year to 27 local authorities.
Additionally, he revealed that since 2018, a total of 173 “People’s Projects” worth RM447.8 million are being implemented.
These projects cover upgrades to roads and drainage systems, waterfront improvements, market upgrades, installation of street lights and traffic lights, as well as public toilets and libraries, among other infrastructure.
Regarding the Rural Transformation Projects, he said the Sarawak government approved a total of 8,600 projects (worth RM1.39 billion) from 2015 to 2026, with 7,117 projects (83%) already completed.
This year, local authorities are implementing 739 rural transformation projects worth a total of RM101.4 million.
Meanwhile, this year the ministry also received an allocation of RM276.02 million from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) for the maintenance of roads under local councils, and up to April 30, RM85.86 million has already been disbursed.
