Chinese Schools Pass on Chinese Culture as the Brunei Campus Literature Competition Concludes

(Borneo Bulletin, Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) The 14th Brunei Chinese Schools Campus Literature Competition's on-site creation was successfully held yesterday at Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School. 69 students from four Chinese schools nationwide competed, writing a beautiful future in Chinese, passing on the torch of Chinese culture.
This creative competition is open to primary and secondary school students enrolled in eight Chinese schools in Brunei, aiming to cultivate students’ creative abilities, stimulate creative thinking, improve writing skills, enhance literary quality and depth, enliven campus writing atmosphere, promote local culture, and improve appreciation and analysis of original literature.
The event, sponsored by the Brunei Hua He Culture and Education Fund and hosted by Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School, attracted enthusiastic participation from 69 primary and secondary students from Chinese schools across Brunei. Through on-site creation (editorials, themed short stories, and themed novellas), it deepened Chinese youth’s understanding and inheritance of Chinese culture.
They came from Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School, Kuala Belait Chung Hwa Middle School, Seria Zhongzheng Middle School, and Tulong Chung Hwa School, totaling 69 contestants. Among them, there are 28 participants in short story creation, 24 in novellas, and 17 in editorials.
Principal Xu Yue Lan of Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School pointed out that the Brunei Chinese Schools Campus Literature Competition has been successfully held for thirteen sessions, receiving enthusiastic participation from many literature lovers in Chinese schools across Brunei. The award-winning works will be included in the anthology "Dancing with Literature," making it highly popular.
The principal revealed that this competition not only created a good learning environment on campus but also promoted the beautiful traditional Chinese culture, becoming a unique blossom in the local educational field. She hopes the contestants can create unique, distinct, and contemporary excellent works from different perspectives and genres, reflecting the endless charm and cultural connotation of Chinese culture, bringing boundless imagination to the readers.
It is worth mentioning that over the years, this event has received strong support from the Brunei Hua He Culture Foundation, ensuring that every session of the competition is held on schedule and concludes successfully.
The atmosphere in the three computer labs of Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School was solemn and intense. Contestants sat upright at their desks, eyes focused on the computer screens, with writing materials carefully prepared by the organizers on the table for contestants to choose freely according to their creative habits.
This competition requires contestants to complete a 400-word short story, an 800-word editorial, and an 800-word or longer original novella in 3 hours. Except for the same editorial theme, the short story and novella each have different themes, and contestants draw themes on-site to create. This requires participants to improvise the plot after drawing key thematic prompts on-site, testing their literary foundation and on-the-spot creative ability.
With the start command of the competition, besides the sound of keyboard tapping, the rustling sound of pen nibs on paper instantly pervaded the entire arena. On-site, the sound of keyboard tapping rose and fell, contestants sometimes concentrated in thought, and sometimes their fingers flew. Writers immersed in creation either bowed their heads in contemplation, tightly gripping pens, carefully constructing plots, or wrote quickly, eyes glinting with excitement, turning ideas from their minds into lively words.
Since its inception in 2012, this event has become an important brand activity of Chinese education in Brunei. The number of participants in this session has increased compared to the last session, and the quality of works is expected to significantly improve, bringing forth a batch of masterpieces with both ideological depth and artistic value.
The successful hosting of this Brunei Campus Literature Competition’s on-site creation provides a stage for Chinese students to showcase their literary talents and exchange cultural ideas, which is of great significance for promoting cultural exchange and integration, achieving the purpose of passing on the torch.
