Veteran Hong Kong actress Wai Ching Ho, who portrayed the classic villain “Madame Gao” in Marvel TV series, has reportedly passed away at the age of 82. Canadian-Japanese actor Peter Shinkoda, who had worked with her before, confirmed the sad news on social media on the 12th, sharing a throwback photo of the two of them on Instagram. He wrote: “I will never forget you. Whether on or off the screen, every minute with you enriched me greatly. We will definitely meet again, my friend. You were so beautiful.” However, Peter Shinkoda did not mention the cause of Wai Ching Ho’s death.
Born in 1943, Wai Ching Ho was originally from Hong Kong and later moved to the United States to pursue an acting career. Her most well-known role was as the prominent leader “Madame Gao” of the mysterious organization “The Hand” in Marvel series such as Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Through her calm and understated performance, she successfully portrayed a highly menacing villain, becoming one of the most iconic characters in Marvel’s street-level hero series.
Aside from her Marvel work, Wai Ching Ho had continued acting in recent years, making guest appearances in the American series Fresh Off the Boat, as well as voicing the grandmother character in the Pixar animated film Turning Red, showcasing her talents across both drama and voice acting.
