(Tehran, May 5) Amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western nations, Iran's state television reported on May 4 that Tehran has unveiled a new solid-fuel ballistic missile with a range of 1,200 kilometers.
Quoting the television broadcast, AFP reported: “The Qasem Basir ballistic missile, powered by solid propellant, has a range of at least 1,200 kilometers and represents Iran’s latest defensive achievement.”
Western nations have long expressed concerns about Iran’s missile capabilities, accusing the country of destabilizing the Middle East.
Iran supports the "Axis of Resistance" network, which includes Yemen's Houthi movement, Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and Iraqi Shia anti-Israel militant groups.
In October last year, Iran and its regional rival Israel launched direct attacks on each other for the first time.
On May 4, Iran’s state television aired an exclusive interview with Defense Minister Nasirzadeh, showcasing footage of the new missile.
Nasirzadeh stated, "If we are attacked, if anyone wages war against us, we will retaliate with force and target their bases."
He added, "We harbor no hostility toward neighboring countries, but U.S. bases are within our sights."
The unveiling of the latest missile comes as Tehran and Washington held three consecutive Saturday meetings in Oman starting April 12 to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.
