Sun De'an: The Minnan Dialect Brought to Brunei, Passed Down from Generation to Generation

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th) The Director of Culture and Education at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Bandar Seri Begawan, Sun De'an, expressed in his speech that Tsinghua University is a world-renowned institution of higher education, and the Rizxin College upholds the spirit of 'renewing oneself daily,' emphasizing humanitarian care and social practice.
Students from Tsinghua University have come a long way this time to conduct research with the theme of 'Collecting Oral Histories of Brunei's Chinese of Kinmen Origin and the Overseas Dissemination of Minnan Culture.' This is profoundly significant and deeply moving for us. The younger generation is willing to step out of campus, go deep into communities, listen to the life stories of older generations of overseas Chinese, and record their history of hard work, entrepreneurship, and rooting themselves overseas. This is a form of respect for history and also an important contribution to the inheritance of Chinese culture.
Sun De'an made these remarks yesterday during an exchange while receiving the visiting student delegation from Tsinghua University at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce clubhouse in Bandar Seri Begawan.
He said that although Brunei is small in land area, the Chinese community has a long history. Early overseas Chinese traveled across the ocean and started from scratch, working diligently on this land and making positive contributions to Brunei's economic development, social construction, and the heritage of Chinese culture.
Among them, many pioneers came from Fujian, especially from the Minnan regions such as Kinmen and Xiamen. They brought the Minnan dialect, traditional customs, clan culture, folk beliefs, and a spirit of diligence and hard work to Brunei, and these have been passed down from generation to generation to this day.
He pointed out that since its establishment, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Bandar Seri Begawan has always adhered to the principles of uniting business, serving members, promoting economic development, and promoting Chinese culture, actively advancing economic, cultural, educational, and people-to-people exchanges between Brunei and China.
In recent years, with the advancement of the 'Belt and Road' Initiative, bilateral relations have deepened continuously. Both sides have achieved encouraging development results in areas such as trade and investment, educational cooperation, and cultural exchanges. We are also pleased to see more and more young people from China coming to Brunei, learning about Brunei, and understanding the history of the Bruneian Chinese community.
He stated that oral history is a very valuable endeavor. Many overseas Chinese elders have gone through historical changes and have personally witnessed the development of the Chinese community. If these precious memories are not timely organized and recorded, they will fade away with the passage of time. Therefore, your current fieldwork is valuable not only academically, but also in terms of cultural inheritance and historical preservation.
Sun De'an expressed, we are very happy to share with everyone the development of the Chamber as well as the history of the development of Chinese business in Brunei. If the students need to contact other Chinese associations, clan associations, educational institutions, or elders in the overseas Chinese community during your research, we will also do our best to assist, hoping to help everyone gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the Bruneian Chinese community.
He also hopes that all students will take these few days to walk more, see more, listen more, and communicate more. In addition to completing the fieldwork tasks, they can also experience Brunei's multicultural and harmonious social characteristics, introduce the real Brunei to more friends, let more young people understand the long-standing friendship between China and Brunei, and let the stories of overseas Chinese's efforts continue to be passed on.
