Shocking Scene in Shantou: Elderly Woman Scatters 2 Million HKD, Passersby Scramble to Collect

On April 14, a dramatic “raining gold bull” scene unfolded on the streets of Longhu District, Shantou, Guangdong. Witnesses reported seeing an elderly woman from a high-floor balcony of the upscale residential complex “Hexin Xinghu City” scatter thick bundles of HK$1,000 bills (approximately RM504) out into the street, as if performing a “celestial maiden scattering flowers.” According to circulating online information, the scattered amount may have reached as much as 2 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately RM1,007,400), prompting a frenzy as large crowds scrambled to collect the money.

Clips circulating on social media platforms Xiaohongshu and the Facebook group “Hong Kong Cars Heading North Sharing Group” show a woman positioned in a high-rise apartment deftly throwing out thick stacks of the golden HK$1,000 banknotes from the window.

Because the residence is located near a bustling city area, many pedestrians stopped in their tracks upon seeing the spectacle, with some even rushing into the middle of the street to pick up money. Lucky individuals who “won” shared photos online of the Hong Kong dollars they had collected, including both HK$1,000 and HK$500 notes. Additionally, eyewitnesses stated that police and firefighters arrived at the scene to handle the situation.

According to media outlet “Xiaoxiang Morning Post,” staff from the residential complex declined to provide details and said, “Everything is fine now.” Staff at the Zhuchi Police Station in Shantou stated, “We’ve handled it,” but declined to give further information. Staff at the Zhuchi Subdistrict Office in Shantou said an official announcement would be released via the Longhu Shichuang public WeChat account.

Some netizens captured footage of the elderly woman involved being escorted away by police.

On the evening of April 14, the Zhuchi Subdistrict Office issued a notice stating that the woman, whose emotional state was unstable due to a relative’s serious illness, has gradually calmed down after being comforted. The scattered banknotes were gradually collected and returned by staff and local residents.
