A 49-year-old man in Yunnan, China, went to his son's school to negotiate after the boy was bullied, but tragically suffered sudden cardiac death due to emotional agitation in the school's mediation room.
According to Jimu News, on April 13, Ms. Li from Qujing, Yunnan, reported to reporters that on the afternoon of March 30, her husband received a call from their child's homeroom teacher stating that their child had been beaten by classmates and requested the parents come to school for mediation. After arriving, her husband learned the details of their son's bullying by other students and died suddenly from emotional distress while in the school's mediation room. He has not yet been buried.
Ms. Li told reporters that their son is 15 years old, a ninth-grade student at Tongquan Middle School in Malong District, Qujing City. Around 5 p.m. on March 30, she and her husband entered Tongquan Middle School. "After entering the school, we learned that since the start of this semester, our son had been repeatedly asked by classmates for snacks, and later for money, and on March 30 was beaten by classmates. We have only this one child. After his father learned the details of the bullying, he became very agitated. After entering the mediation room from the school playground, within a few minutes of mediation, he was gone."
Ms. Li stated that after her husband's accident, school staff provided an AED, but no one present knew how to use it. After calling 120 emergency services, emergency personnel instructed her on CPR over the phone. A few minutes later, emergency staff arrived at the scene, but her husband had already been pronounced dead.
To date, Ms. Li's husband's body has not yet been buried. She also provided her husband's medical death certificate showing his name as Yang, aged 49, time of death as March 30, place of death as Tongquan Middle School, Malong District, and cause of death as sudden cardiac death.
Staff from the Malong District Education and Sports Bureau told reporters that the matter is being handled and that details are not convenient to disclose. Another staff member from the bureau stated that a special team has been set up to deal with the situation, and that local police have launched an investigation into the parental report of bullying at the school and the parent's sudden death during mediation.
