(Thailand, 27th) – On the 26th, Thailand's Democrat Party announced that its party leader and former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, along with two others, will run as the party's candidates for the next prime minister.
The Democrat Party released a campaign video on social media the same day, unveiling the three candidates: Abhisit; Deputy Party Leader and former Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij; and also Deputy Party Leader Kiat Sittheeamorn.
In the campaign video, 61-year-old Abhisit stated that for Thailand to overcome poverty, it must begin by establishing a clean political system and improving transparency in various systems.
Abhisit previously served as Thailand's prime minister from 2008 to 2011. After losing the 2019 general election, he resigned as Democrat Party leader and left the party in 2023.
In October 2025, Abhisit returned to the Democrat Party and became party leader again. At that time, at the party congress, he faced no opponents and was elected as the party's 10th leader with an overwhelming 96.2% of the vote. Amid enthusiastic applause, he thanked party members for giving him their trust again, and called on both longtime and new members to work together to advance the Democrat Party.
The new election for Thailand's House of Representatives will be held on February 8, 2026. Each political party must submit their prime ministerial candidates (up to three people per party) between December 28 and 31 of this year.
