The governments of Portugal and Italy announced separately on the 1st that they will provide assistance to their citizens detained by Israel from the 'Global Resilience Flotilla'.

The Israeli navy intercepted a flotilla delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza in international waters that evening.

According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, three Portuguese citizens were arrested: Left Bloc MP Mortágua, actor Aparício, and activist Duarte.

Portuguese President de Sousa stated that the government will provide full consular assistance through the Portuguese embassy in Israel and fully support the detained individuals’ return home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the embassy in Israel had been in contact with the Israeli government for several days, requesting that Israel "maintain their dignity and not use violence" in handling Portuguese nationals, and "respect human rights". Previously, the Portuguese side had asked Israel through diplomatic channels to avoid the use of force against the 'Global Resilience Flotilla'.

Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Tajani said on the 1st that the government had instructed its embassy and consulates in Israel to assist all Italian citizens in the 'Global Resilience Flotilla' who were intercepted and are to be repatriated.

Earlier that day, Italy and Greece issued a joint statement calling on Israel to ensure the safety of members of the 'Global Resilience Flotilla' and to allow relevant countries to provide consular protection measures.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Greece and Italy believe it is necessary to safeguard channels for humanitarian aid to Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.
