On the night of the 4th, a wild elephant attacked local residents in Chitwan District, south-central Nepal, resulting in the death of a mother and her child. The attacking elephant came from Chitwan National Park and often intrudes into residential areas. Over the years, it has caused the deaths of a total of 25 people. After the incident, local residents staged protests, demanding stronger measures to control the killer elephant and ensure residents' safety.
According to a police report cited by the local Republica newspaper on Sunday, the incident occurred in an area of Bharatpur city, Chitwan District, near Chitwan National Park, where a woman and her son were attacked by a wild elephant while sleeping at home and died on the spot.
At the time, the woman's husband tried to drive the elephant away by setting a fire, but the blaze spread to the house. Local residents and police later extinguished the fire, preventing further casualties.
According to the Kantipur Daily, the elephant responsible is a male named “Dhurbe” from Chitwan National Park. In recent years, this elephant has repeatedly broken into homes around the park, destroying houses and crops, and attacking local residents.
Chitwan National Park is a well-known wildlife conservation area in Nepal. Human-elephant conflicts regularly occur in surrounding residential areas, leading to a long-standing conflict between community safety and wildlife protection.
