(Bandar Seri Begawan, 1st) The Department of Electrical Services (JPE) issued a statement that on Thursday, March 19, 2026, multiple power supply interruptions occurred in parts of Brunei-Muara and Belait districts.
According to investigations, these power outages were caused by attempted theft of underground cables and other essential equipment, resulting in significant damage to the department’s infrastructure.
Such incidents undermine the department’s power supply system infrastructure, leading the public to experience frequent and long-term power interruptions.
On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, a similar incident occurred again. However, after detecting the issue, the department took swift action to successfully control the situation and ensure a stable power supply in the affected areas.
The department once again reminds the public that any act or attempt of theft or vandalism of electricity assets, including cables, could result in serious personal injury or even death.
Therefore, the Department of Electrical Services requests the public to help monitor relevant areas and report any suspicious activity.
To ensure the safety of government assets and maintain stable public power supply, we sincerely thank the public for their continued cooperation.
The department also emphasized that cable theft is a criminal offense under Section 380B and Section 427B of Chapter 22 of the Penal Code. According to the Penal Code (Amendment) Order 2021, providing electricity to the public is one of the major services.
Those who violate the relevant regulations can face imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than ten years, and shall also be subject to not less than four and not more than twelve strokes of the cane.
The Department of Electrical Services will continue to work with the Royal Brunei Police Force and relevant agencies to eradicate and prevent cable theft, ensuring the power supply to the public is not affected.
For any suspicious activity, the public can make a report to the Darussalam Hotline at 123 or the Police Emergency Hotline at 993.
