Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei announced that Iran and the three countries of the UK, France, and Germany will hold talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 26th, regarding the Iranian nuclear issue and other topics.
He stated that this vice-ministerial level meeting is a follow-up action to the phone conversation the Iranian Foreign Minister had on the 22nd with the foreign ministers of the UK, France, and Germany as well as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In addition to discussing the lifting of sanctions and nuclear issues, the meeting will also discuss United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 and its future direction.
According to the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue signed in 2015, Iran pledged to limit its nuclear program and, in return, the international community lifted sanctions against Iran. The UN Security Council subsequently adopted Resolution 2231 to endorse the Iran nuclear deal. This resolution includes a "snapback" sanctions mechanism, which allows signatory countries to take measures in response to Iran’s violations of the deal. The validity of this mechanism lasts until October 18 this year.
Recently, Western countries have threatened to activate the "snapback" sanctions mechanism, demanding that Iran continue to abide by the nuclear deal, including restoring full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and limiting the scale of nuclear development according to the agreement. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi stated that Europe has no right to discuss or implement the nuclear deal, including the "snapback" sanctions mechanism.
