As the region grapples with a tumultuous global landscape, Malaysia has placed the MADANI principles at the core of its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, focusing on inclusivity and sustainability.
Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that the Malaysian leadership is committed to setting new standards for global governance and guiding enduring values such as inclusivity, diversity, and future-oriented planning.
"That is why the theme for Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship this year is ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability.’ We not only aim to set the pace for the next 12 months but also look forward to setting new standards for global governance revolving around enduring values such as inclusivity, diversity, and future-oriented planning."
He said in his opening remarks at the informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers at the Langkawi International Convention Centre today that Malaysia will adopt an inclusive approach at all levels through the MADANI principles, emphasizing the importance of supporting small, medium, and micro enterprises, and ensuring that technology plays a crucial role in development.
He reiterated that Malaysia is committed to promoting inclusive development, providing equal opportunities for all social strata, and ensuring no one is left behind.
"In the spirit of this effort, we hope to see this among ASEAN member countries, that Southeast Asia is not a region composed of 10 countries—rather, there are 11 of us, and all 11 nations should fully engage in the well-being of the organization to maintain the prosperity of this region."
Hasan emphasized the necessity to demonstrate inclusivity within ASEAN, otherwise all our rhetoric will seem hollow.
"We must walk the talk, and we must show trust and support for each other."
