(Bandar Seri Begawan, 14th) The Brunei Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre (STEP Centre) organized an educational activity on August 8, leading 46 secondary school Year 9 and Year 10 science class students to the Belalong Tropical Biodiversity Centre to participate in the "Agriculture and Biodiversity: Forest Biodiversity Awareness Project."
This activity aligns with STEP Centre’s mission to promote STEAM education, enabling students to gain deeper understanding of Brunei's rich tropical biodiversity and the close relationship between forest ecology and agriculture through hands-on experiences and field exploration.
The event involved a total of 46 students, including 27 students from the Year 9 science classes and 19 students from the Year 10 science classes, accompanied by two lead teachers.
The activity lasted about 2 to 3 hours and included an introduction to the centre, ecological exhibitions, a forest guided tour, as well as practical learning sessions.
Guided by the professional staff at the Tropical Biodiversity Centre, students first learned about the centre’s overall facilities and its important role as a hub for information on forest resources and ecological conservation. Then, students visited the centre’s exhibitions, observed specimens of unique Bruneian flora and fauna up-close, and gained awareness of the distinctive value of local biodiversity.
The highlight of the activity was the forest hike and practical learning segment. Led by instructors, students walked along the forest trail at the back of the centre, observing marked features of plants and ecosystems along the way.
Through on-site observation and explanations, students further deepened their understanding of tropical rainforest ecology and learned about the crucial significance of sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.

This "Forest Biodiversity Awareness Project" is an extension of the Centre’s "Agriculture and Environment Program", aiming to bring classroom knowledge into real-life environments, strengthening students’ awareness of ecological conservation through experiential learning, and nurturing the younger generation to become future guardians of environmental protection.
