Philippine President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. met with senior executives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) at Malacañang Palace on Wednesday to discuss the company’s planned investments in the Philippines, including investing up to $5 billion over the next 15 years to establish an AWS Region cloud data center in the country.
According to a statement from the Philippine Presidential Communications Office, both parties discussed expanding AWS’s business footprint in the Philippines to support the government’s drive for digital transformation and its aim to make the Philippines a regional hub for digital infrastructure.
The statement pointed out that the proposed investment includes establishing an AWS Region—cloud computing infrastructure consisting of multiple data centers—to provide cloud computing services directly to the Philippines.
Once implemented, the plan is expected to further enhance the country’s digital infrastructure, create thousands of high-value job opportunities, and provide enterprises, startups, and government agencies with faster, safer, and more reliable cloud services.
This plan is also seen as helping to enhance the Philippines’ digital competitiveness and strengthen the application and development of key cloud technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, cybersecurity, e-commerce, and digital government services.
