(Kuala Lumpur, 9th) Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin said that the government will study upgrading the scanning equipment at airports nationwide to enhance security measures and improve the effectiveness of luggage checks.
He pointed out that the government has always maintained an open attitude towards exploring the adoption of the latest inspection equipment, in line with technological advancements, especially at the country’s main entry and exit points.
He said that the current scanning equipment at airports is operating well and is capable of efficiently detecting hazardous items.
Speaking at a press conference today after officiating the Immigration Department Football Club’s motorcycle parade, he said the government will also study ways to improve the scope of luggage inspection so as to detect prohibited items, including attempts to smuggle drugs.
"In terms of inspection scope, (currently) the focus is more on weapons rather than prohibited items. This is an area where we need to make improvements based on the professional capabilities of inspection staff."
Saifuddin said that he and agencies under the Home Ministry will hold a special meeting tomorrow to discuss the implementation of a comprehensive plan to improve security control at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
"The Home Ministry and the Ministry of Transport have been urged to submit a comprehensive improvement plan to reduce issues in operations, equipment, and manpower."
Previously, Saifuddin said the Cabinet instructed the Home Ministry and Ministry of Transport to submit a comprehensive plan within two weeks to improve security control at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
He pointed out that the government made this decision due to recent incidents, as these incidents not only risk damaging the country’s image but also raise concerns from the outside about vulnerabilities in the airport security screening systems.
