(Kuala Lumpur, 26th) Perikatan Nasional (PN) will hold a special Supreme Council meeting this Thursday (January 29) to officially confirm the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin and appoint a new chairman.
According to a meeting notice issued by PN Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin on January 23, this meeting is being convened in response to written requests made by Gerakan President and PN Deputy Chairman Datuk Dr. Dominic Lau and PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, on January 7 and 10 respectively.
According to Article 12.2 of the PN constitution, if at least half of the member parties submit a written request to the Secretary-General, a special Supreme Council meeting must be convened, and the Secretary-General must call the meeting within 14 days of receiving the request.
According to the same notice, the meeting will, in accordance with Article 8.3(II)(b) of the party constitution, select one of its deputy chairmen to preside over the meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 8:30 pm at the Gerakan headquarters. The agenda will first confirm the resignation of PN Chairman Muhyiddin, followed by the appointment of a successor. The procedures for Muhyiddin’s resignation and the appointment of the new chairman will be carried out in accordance with Article 8.3(I)(b) of the PN constitution.
Previously, it was reported that Muhyiddin, who is the Chairman of Bersatu and Member of Parliament for Pagoh, had officially announced his resignation as PN chairman effective January 1. The former Prime Minister has led the coalition for five years since its official registration on August 7, 2020. PN’s main member parties include Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan.
Following Muhyiddin’s resignation, speculation about potential successors has intensified, with names mentioned including PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri. Previously, within PAS, including youth chief Afnan Hamimi, there have been calls for the PN chairman post to be handed to PAS.
