KUCHING: Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, has expressed hope that the strong relationship between the ministry and the media will continue to grow, describing media practitioners as vital partners in serving the Sarawakians.

Speaking at the ministry’s inaugural Media Night at Imperial Hotel here last night (Friday, August 29), Julaihi stressed that the media play a crucial role as the bridge between the government and the people, particularly in times of disruption to water, electricity, gas, or telecommunications services.

“You are all our strategic partners in safeguarding the utilities and telecommunications sector.

“Continue your efforts with your lenses and voices in delivering news, information, and the initiatives of the Sarawak Government,” he said.

He said the event was organised to appreciate and recognise the continuous contributions of media practitioners who have long supported the ministry in ensuring that information reaches the people accurately, swiftly, and effectively.

“The media are not only conveyors of news, but also educators, guides, and connectors between the government and the people, as well as the people’s voice through constructive criticism and valuable suggestions,” he added.

In the meantime, Julaihi noted that Sarawak’s electricity coverage has already surpassed 99 percent, with rural coverage approaching 98.6 percent.

He reaffirmed the state’s goal of achieving 100 percent electrification by 2030, though connecting remote and newly developed areas remains a challenge.

Julaihi then further acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation on social media, underlining the importance of transparent communication.

“Our principle is simple: we do not want to sweep problems under the carpet.

“If we hide them, they may turn into a ‘dragon’ that will endanger us in the future,” he said.

The Media Night, held for the first time by the ministry, was aimed at strengthening ties with media practitioners while recognising their role as long-standing partners in disseminating government policies and initiatives to the Sarawakians.

Deputy Minister Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Legal Affairs and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry, Datuk Jafri Lias, were some of the dignitaries present during the media night.
