Wildfires broke out on the 1st in the Hérault and Aude departments of southern France, with the burned area so far reaching 800 hectares. Hundreds of firefighters, six firefighting planes, and one helicopter have been deployed to contain the fires.
Aude authorities pointed out that the wildfire originated in the Beaufort area of Hérault, burning approximately 400 hectares before spreading into Aude.
Before this wildfire, France had experienced several days of heatwave. Strong winds and drought caused the fire to spread rapidly among low and extremely dry vegetation.
The mountainous terrain has made it difficult for firefighters to reach the site, and firefighting progress is not looking optimistic.
Emergency services stated that around 200 local residents have been evacuated or asked to take shelter at home due to the wildfire.
