On the 1st, the Portuguese government issued a high temperature warning, strengthened wildfire prevention and control, and increased protection measures for vulnerable groups to respond to the upcoming extreme heatwave weather.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere stated that starting from the 2nd, 12 out of Portugal’s 18 mainland regions will enter a red high temperature warning status, which is expected to last at least until the 4th. The remaining 6 regions will be under an orange high temperature warning status.

Portuguese Interior Minister Neves said on the 1st that in the coming days, the highest temperature could reach 47°C.

He called on citizens to remain highly vigilant and avoid any dangerous behavior that could cause fires, including burning farmland, open-air incineration, outdoor barbecues, etc. He also reminded people not to discard cigarette butts carelessly, and not to park vehicles in vegetated areas to reduce fire risks.

On the same day, the Portuguese Ministry of Health announced a high temperature response plan, requiring municipal governments to provide temporarily air-conditioned cooling shelters to provide shelter for vulnerable groups if necessary.

Starting from the 1st, some cities, including the capital Lisbon, have opened parts of metro stations beyond normal operation hours to provide nighttime cooling spaces for the homeless.

Given that the risk of wildfires in Portugal will intensify in the coming days, the Portuguese Civil Protection Department has raised the fire warning level to Level 3, meaning a relatively high alert.
