After the new government came to power in Vilnius, negotiations on resuming economic and trade cooperation with Taiwan have been restarted.
According to a report by Lithuanian National Radio and Television on Monday, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Lithuania has resumed negotiations on economic and trade cooperation with Taiwan following the government reshuffle.
The Ministry stated that strengthening economic cooperation with Taiwan is in line with Lithuania's long-term foreign policy objectives, and therefore, Lithuania will sign an Economic Cooperation Action Plan with Taiwan after completing the negotiations.
It is reported that the focus of these negotiations is on establishing sustainable economic ties, thereby promoting the development of Lithuania's high-tech industry. However, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that as both sides are still in consultation, the specific details of the action plan will not be disclosed at this stage.
Lithuania originally hoped to finalize the action plan in May and officially sign the agreement in June, but after the discussions, the negotiations were put on hold.
In 2021, Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a representative office under the name "Taiwan." Beijing regarded this move as a violation of the "One China" principle, which led to a deterioration of relations between the two countries.
