(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) As one of the founding countries of the Hague Group, Malaysia urges the group to strengthen engagement with the United Nations Security Council to promote the implementation of an arms embargo and sanctions on Israel.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan pointed out that this is an important step to push the Security Council to exercise its authority in accordance with Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter.
He made a special address at the ministerial meeting of the Hague Group on the Palestinian issue, held during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, noting that this is one of the ways to strengthen the group's efforts, aiming to isolate and pressure Israel to force it to stop its genocidal war in Gaza.
“The Hague Group must convene all peace-loving countries to call for a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, including the suspension of all existing agreements on the supply of military and dual-use materials, such as technology and heavy civilian machinery.
“In this manner, we can deprive a state bent on carrying out genocide of its means.”
Mohamad Hasan also emphasized the necessity to establish closer cooperation with other organizations fighting for the rights of the Palestinian people, such as the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
He noted that many UN member states have recognized Palestine as an independent state, and thus called on the organization to seize this growing global momentum to strengthen efforts and further call for an end to the long-standing injustices suffered by the Palestinian people.
“Due to the inhumane blockade imposed by the Israeli military, residents of Gaza are on the brink of despair.
“If they do not die from bullets or bombs, they are doomed by starvation. The phenomenon of acute malnutrition among children is increasingly severe. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, illegal settlements continue to expand, with plans announced for full annexation.”
He reiterated that Malaysia will continue to participate in and support the collective efforts of the Hague Group to defend the destiny of the Palestinian people.
On the other hand, Mohamad Hasan pointed out that Malaysia is deeply concerned about the latest report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Palestine, as it mentions the role some multinational corporations play in assisting Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land.
“We urge the international community to pay close attention to this.”
The Hague Group is an alliance composed of several countries, aimed at coordinating legal, economic, and diplomatic measures to respond to Israel's violations of international law, especially its actions in and against the Palestinian people.
The organization was established earlier this year in the Netherlands by Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa.
Since October 7, 2023, the genocidal assaults launched by Israel on Gaza have caused more than 65,000 deaths, most of whom are women and children, and have led to massive destruction in the region.
The blockade implemented by this regime has triggered a severe humanitarian disaster and famine.
