(Kuching, 10th) The Sarawak government will hold a state-level special Labor Day gathering on May 18 at the Hikmah Exchange in Kuching.
Deputy Minister of Labor, Immigration, and Project Monitoring at the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Dato Gerawat Gala, stated that this is the first time a Labor Day celebration is held at the state level, aimed at thanking workers from different sectors.
He mentioned that although Labor Day is generally celebrated on May 1 every year, considering the arrangement of activities and the full participation of related parties, the state-level celebration has been rescheduled to a more suitable date.
“Although May 1 is Labor Day, due to the timing not being suitable and our wish for Sarawak Premier Dato Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari to personally attend and officiate the opening ceremony, we decided to move the celebration to May 18 and hold it at the Hikmah Exchange. We've invited employer representatives, employee representatives, union members, as well as staff from federal and Sarawak public services to participate.”
He stated this while being invited to a talk show hosted by the Sarawak Public Relations Unit (UKAS) yesterday.
He revealed that employees from the federal, state government, and private sectors will be recognized and appreciated during the ceremony to highlight their contributions. He also does not rule out the possibility of developing this celebration into an annual event.
Additionally, Dato Gerawat emphasized that the Sarawak government is committed to fully implementing the amendments to the Labor Ordinance to protect the rights and welfare of Sarawak workers, including those in rural and remote areas.
He said the Sarawak Labor Department will be responsible for implementing and executing the amendments, which came into effect on May 1.
“We believe that the Sarawak Labor Department will diligently fulfill its duties and fully implement all revised content. The purpose is to protect our workers, who play a critical role in Sarawak’s development. Now, Sarawak employees can enjoy more comprehensive protection and work in a safer, more secure environment.”
Addressing the challenges in rural areas, the government is actively promoting a wide-reaching engagement and communication program across Sarawak through the Labor Department, encompassing employees, unions, and employers.
In order to overcome challenges in rural areas, the government is actively implementing a comprehensive management participation program covering workers, trade unions, and employers across Sarawak through the Labor Department.
This initiative aims to enhance public awareness of labor law compliance and shared responsibility.
Despite the difficulty in fully monitoring all regions, the government still encourages employees to bravely step forward and report any violations by employers.
