(Kuching, Jan 2) The Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng, called on all parties to continue focusing on environmental protection issues, particularly starting with education to nurture the next generation's awareness of environmental protection.

He mentioned that the Governor of Sarawak  Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi   had, during his tenure as Environment Minister, promoted various environmental protection measures and expressed regret over some policies that could not be continued.

He believes that if the previous flood management plans were successfully implemented, today's disaster could have been mitigated better.

He emphasized that the city council will continue to closely monitor flood issues to ensure smooth disaster relief operations, while also strengthening future disaster prevention measures.

He hopes that the rainfall will ease during the Lunar New Year period to minimize the impact of the floods and also reminded citizens to pay attention to environmental changes.

During a Facebook live broadcast yesterday, Dato Huang Hung Sheng pointed out that continuous rainfall has triggered severe floods, and the government is actively taking response measures.

He stated that in facing disasters, the stability and efficiency of Sarawak's government response capabilities are crucial.

“The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee team starts monitoring the disaster situation at dawn every day, with the committee chairman, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom, starting work as early as 4 AM to ensure the situation is handled in a timely manner.”

He disclosed that the Kuching South City Council team has gone to several affected low-lying areas, such as Batu Kawa, for on-site inspection and interaction with local residents.

He said that through on-site inspections, officials can have a more direct understanding of the disaster situation to make more accurate decisions in meetings.

“The flood issue in Batu Kawa has entered the review stage, and the city council is waiting for reports from relevant units to take further response measures.”

Dato Wee disclosed that recent abnormal weather, with temperatures dropping to as low as 23 degrees, clearly reflects the impact of climate change.

He urged citizens to increase their environmental awareness to cope with the long-term effects of climate change.
