Adam Yii: Need to Improve Artificial Lake's Ecological Environment

(Miri, 4th) In response to the issues of foam, green water color, and odor in the large pond of Miri's artificial lake, the Miri City Council has taken swift action. With the assistance of the Sarawak Department of Agriculture, water samples and ecological analysis were conducted on December 11, 2024, resulting in a detailed water quality inspection report. Miri Mayor and N.74 Pujut State Assemblyman YB Adam Yii led a team to the site yesterday to review the water quality inspection report.

The report, provided by the Sarawak Department of Agriculture after sampling and analyzing the lake's ecosystem on December 11, 2024, offers a detailed assessment of the current water quality status and ecological issues of the artificial lake.

According to observations and inspection results, the agriculture department found that the water quality readings of the artificial lake are still within normal range. However, the large number of catfish in the pond may be the primary cause of the water turning green, increased foam, and odors. The foam may be generated due to the mucus naturally secreted on the surface of the catfish and the movement of water caused by the paddle wheel providing oxygen to the lake, concentrating the foam in a specific area. In addition, uncleaned food residues have further exacerbated these problems.

The Sarawak Department of Agriculture suggested that the city council strictly control the stocking of fish and other aquatic life, only permit feeding of pelletized feed, and reasonably control feeding amounts based on the number of fish to prevent leftover food from polluting the water quality and improve the lake's ecological environment:

Regarding the report, YB Adam Yii  stated that the artificial lake is an important recreational park and fitness venue for Miri residents, and its ecological environment directly affects people's activity experience and Miri's image. Therefore, he instructed city council officials to immediately take action and implement the agricultural department's recommendations to ensure the problem is properly resolved.

“The city council will go all out to ensure the environment of the artificial lake is more pleasant, providing citizens with a healthier and more comfortable leisure space. Meanwhile, citizens are urged to jointly protect the park environment and reduce interference with the ecosystem,” YB Adam Yii  emphasized.

The Miri City Council will also continue to collaborate with relevant departments in the future to continually optimize lake management plans, ensuring the artificial lake remains a comfortable, beautiful, and sustainably developed green recreational space.
