(Kuching, Jan 4)A 28-year-old Mr. Pang was falsely involved in a tax dispute due to a company registered in his name without his knowledge. The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia accused him of owing MYR 750,000 in income tax, resulting in a travel restriction.
Milton Foo Director of the Sarawak United People's Party Public Complaints Bureau, revealed at a press conference today that Mr. Pang is a chef at a Western restaurant in Singapore. During a vacation in Kuching last November, he attempted to return to Singapore on the 28th but was forced to remain in Kuching due to the travel restriction.
He stated that the company used Mr. Pang's name to complete the registration without his knowledge.
“In December 2024, Mr. Pang received a letter from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia for the first time, requesting him to pay approximately MYR 750,000 in back taxes.”
He emphasized that the tax office enacted the travel restriction without presenting relevant evidence or detailed documents, severely affecting his career and causing significant mental and economic stress.
Milton Foopointed out that with the help of Legal Director Chen Li Heng from Kuching Unity Charity Association, Mr. Pang checked with the Companies Commission of Malaysia and was shocked to learn that his name was used to register a company.
“The company was registered in Selangor in 2021. Later, Mr. Pang visited the Inland Revenue Board 3 or 4 times to request the company's information and tax details, but was told that since the company was registered in Selangor, local offices couldn't check the information.”
He disclosed that the Inland Revenue Board then sent two letters to Mr. Pang's home in early December, but the tax amounts differed. One letter stated he owed MYR 750,000, and another said MYR 48,000, based on a tax assessment from 2021.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Pang's lawyer, Lawyer Wong, pointed out that this case reflects systemic management loopholes. His team will formally file a request with the Inland Revenue Board to lift the travel restriction and demand a thorough investigation into the impersonation.
“If the issue cannot be satisfactorily resolved, we will consider legal action against the tax office and related departments to seek compensation for Mr. Pang's economic and mental damages.”
Milton Foohopes that the tax office will clarify the facts soon, allowing Mr. Pang to resume his normal life. He also calls for public attention to similar incidents to prevent further innocent people from being implicated.
