(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) Dr. Zi Rongyao, a doctoral student from the School of Law and Society at Yunnan Normal University, conducted a cultural research visit in Brunei. He deeply explored the overall situation and history of the Chinese community in Brunei as well as the evolution of Chinese language education, and investigated the current state of Chinese people's cultural life there.
During the fieldwork, he visited several prominent members and representatives from Brunei’s Chinese community and education sector. These included Sun Shengli, Lin Pengguo, Li Chunjin, Zheng Bingguang, Huang Linming, and others, engaging in in-depth discussions on the development trajectory of the Chinese community in Brunei. Sun Shengli, chairman of the Chung Hwa School in Tutong, introduced the school’s recent implementation of smart digital classroom facilities and their proactive exploration into modern teaching methods. Lin Pengguo shared many family stories and deeds of several Chinese court officials; Li Chunjin introduced the migration history of Hockchia people and their traditional industries and development in Brunei; Former and current chairmen of the Brunei Fuzhou Association, Zheng Bingguang and Huang Linming, respectively outlined the migration pathways of the Fuzhou people.
Dr. Zi Rongyao, accompanied by veteran Bruneian education specialist Shen Renxiang, also visited the Brunei History Museum and Constitution Memorial Hall, seeking out officially released documents on the evolution of education, Sino-Brunei historical relations, and official Bruneian history, thus collecting precious first-hand historical materials for his research on the development of Brunei’s education and the history of Chinese immigrants.
In addition, the research activity explored the history of Chinese agricultural reclamation in Sungai Liang, and at the 70-year-old He Xiang traditional shop, he sampled the famous stir-fried kway teow, inquiring with the owners about their family's life in Brunei. This offered a perspective on the lives of Chinese immigrants through food culture, and the forms of integration and interaction with local ethnic groups.
This fieldwork by Dr. Zi Rongyao has contributed a wealth of groundwork for the in-depth study of Brunei’s Chinese society, Chinese language education, and Sino-Brunei cultural exchanges, holding positive significance for people-to-people exchanges and academic cooperation between the two regions.
