Ah Sa Once Suffered a Mild Stroke, Vocal Cords Damaged, 'Relied on Injections to Sing'

43-year-old Hong Kong actress Ah Sa (Charlene Choi) originally debuted as an actress, and later in 2001 formed the singing duo 'Twins' with Ah Gil (Gillian Chung), excelling in both acting and singing. In a recent interview program, she admitted that her vocal cords were severely damaged and she couldn’t make a sound, and was even diagnosed by doctors as having suffered a mild stroke. After every performance, she would hide in her hotel room and cry.

Ah Sa recently participated in Chinese singer Hu Yanbin’s online program "Hu Lai Tavern," during which she mentioned that her vocal cords are different from most people's: when producing the "Yi" sound, her vocal cords appear one long and one short. Back then, when her vocal cords were damaged, she almost always had to rely on injections to be able to sing, and she sought out help from doctors everywhere. Unexpectedly, one famous doctor even asked, "Have you ever had a stroke?" Ah Sa said something as serious as a stroke, she would definitely know, but the doctor thought she might've suffered a mild stroke.

Ah Sa confessed that at the time, after every performance, she would break down and cry in her hotel room, because she felt that audience members had paid money to see the show yet she couldn’t deliver a perfect performance, so she was filled with guilt. Besides feeling sorry towards the audience, she also felt very bad for her partner Ah Gil, "If I can’t sing something, Ah Gil has to help me, making her burden even heavier. That period was really hard for me."

Ah Sa said that her vocal cord issues plagued her for at least 10 years. Even though her voice has improved a lot now, there is still a shadow left in her heart. Hu Yanbin praised her for having the courage, at the peak of her career, to "go back to basics" and find a vocal coach to retrain her singing for her career needs, showing her dedication to the professionalism of performance.
