At the invitation of Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Than Swe, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith led a delegation for an official visit to Myanmar from June 11 to 13, during which both sides exchanged views on deepening bilateral cooperation and regional affairs.
On the 12th, Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Than Swe held bilateral talks with Saleumxay at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on further consolidating the traditional friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between their foreign ministries and promote the resumption of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms. At the same time, they resolved to deepen border security cooperation and jointly combat transnational criminal activities, including online fraud.
During the talks, the two sides also discussed strengthening parliamentary cooperation, boosting exchanges and interactions at the government, parliamentary, and people-to-people levels, and exchanged views on expanding cooperation in areas such as education, energy, trade, labor, and sports to promote socio-economic development in both countries.
U Than Swe said that this visit comes at a significant time, as Myanmar and Laos have both recently formed new governments. He wished Laos success in soon graduating from the status of "Least Developed Country" and expressed gratitude for Laos' long-standing constructive support to Myanmar within the ASEAN framework.
He said Myanmar and Laos joined ASEAN in the same year, share deep friendship, and that Myanmar is willing to continue close cooperation with Laos on regional and international affairs.
Saleumxay welcomed Myanmar's recent positive developments and looked forward to further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
He emphasized the importance of upgrading border checkpoint facilities and promoting the development of border trade, and expressed confidence that the friendship associations of both countries would further enhance people-to-people exchanges and interaction.
Saleumxay pointed out that issues involving ASEAN affairs should be handled in the spirit of the "ASEAN family" and unity. Laos will also continue close cooperation with Myanmar at the bilateral level as well as under regional frameworks such as ASEAN, the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), and the Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV) cooperation mechanism.
During the visit, Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Than Swe and his wife hosted a luncheon at the Parkroyal Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw in the afternoon of the 12th to welcome Saleumxay, his wife, and members of the Lao delegation.
