Trump Must Pay $5 Million: US Supreme Court Rejects Appeal in Sexual Assault Case Brought by Female Writer

Published at Jun 30, 2026 03:22 pm
On the 29th, the US Supreme Court rejected former President Trump's appeal, refusing to overturn the judgment in the sexual assault and defamation case brought by writer Carroll.

The Supreme Court declined to hear the case without providing a reason. This means the Supreme Court upheld the 2023 ruling by the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York, which found that Trump had committed sexual assault and defamation against Carroll, and ordered him to pay $5 million (approximately 20.34 million ringgit) in compensation.

Carroll, now 82 years old, accused then-President Trump in 2019 of sexually assaulting her in the mid-1990s. Trump denounced the case on social media as 'a complete and total scam.'

After the Southern District of New York made its ruling in May 2023, Trump filed an appeal. In December 2024, the appellate court upheld the original verdict. Trump then requested Supreme Court intervention.

According to The New York Times, the Supreme Court's decision on the 29th is a major blow to Trump and likely marks the end of his legal efforts to overturn the original verdict.

In addition, in another lawsuit brought by Carroll against Trump, a jury in the Southern District of New York handed down a verdict in January 2024, ordering Trump to pay Carroll a total of $83.3 million in defamation damages and penalties. Trump's appeal against this substantial award is still being processed.
