(Miri, 20th) Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato' Sri Abdul Karim, stated that although the Premier of Sarawak set this year's tourist number target at 5 million, he believes that Sarawak has the capability to achieve it.
He said that although the target for 2024 is 4 million tourists, this goal was reached by November, and the final result was 4.8 million. Therefore, the above target set in the 2025 financial budget by the premier will also be met.
Abdul Karim made these remarks during the launching ceremony of the Miri GongXi Bazaar .
He pointed out that the diversity of the Miri GongXi Bazaar will successfully attract many tourists, making it one of the main events that will assist Sarawak's tourism industry in reaching its goals.
“Sarawak has achieved its annual tourist target since 2022, with 2 million tourists in 2022, 3 million in 2023, and 4 million last year.”
He revealed that the neighboring country, Brunei, is a major contributor to Sarawak’s tourism goals, with approximately 150,000 Bruneian tourists visiting Miri each month last year for sightseeing and shopping. He believes this trend will continue this year, especially with numerous celebrations and events hosted in Miri, which not only boost commerce but also bring international tourists to Miri.
He also mentioned that 2024 is a promising year for Sarawak, hoping the growth continues, and he encourages the Miri City Council and Chinese Chamber of Commerce to organize more large-scale events. The Sarawak government will continue to support these efforts through the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.
“Miri is an important gateway to Sarawak, and it always makes me feel proud because Miri is fortunate to have two UNESCO World Heritage sites.”
He further mentioned that to promote tourism more effectively, the government will advance infrastructure development in Niah, preparing better conditions to attract foreign tourists.
