(Miri jan 20) The 2025 Miri GongXi Bazaar, co-organized by the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Miri City Council, held its launch ceremony last night at the parking lot in front of the former Miri Resident's Office. The event was officiated by Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim.
Joint Committee Chairman, Mayor YB Adam Yii, stated that the GongXi Bazaar has become a proud tradition and valuable heritage of the Miri people. Established in 2000, it has been held for 21 editions over 25 years, with a 4-year pause due to the reconstruction of the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce building and the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the Colorful Market is not only a marketplace for Lunar New Year preparations but also a true symbol of Miri's spirit, cultural integration, and the unity of the people of Sarawak. Each year, this vibrant market is eagerly anticipated by the people of Miri. The sky is adorned with red lanterns, various stalls, and spectacular performances, all of which exude the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.
“Although this market primarily celebrates the Chinese tradition of welcoming the New Year, what makes us prouder is that it belongs not only to the Chinese community but to all ethnic groups in Sarawak. Whether Chinese, Malay, Iban, or other ethnic groups, everyone participates in this festival with a sense of ownership. The vendors working hand-in-hand, the enthusiastic shoppers, and the countless friends and family sharing laughter vividly showcase the beauty of Sarawak's multicultural harmony. This reflects that the harmonious environment in Miri is not just an idealized concept but a reality we actively maintain.”
He also said that this is a phenomenon unique to Sarawak, where people of different races live together peacefully and celebrate each other's festivals. This spirit of mutual respect and tolerance is a valuable asset of Miri and Sarawak, admired by people worldwide. In such a harmonious context, the Colorful Market has become a shining event not only for Miri but for all of Sarawak. We must recognize that the significance of the Colorful Market goes beyond celebrating the Lunar New Year; its impact is more profound: on one hand, it greatly promotes Miri's economic development. The lively atmosphere not only brings the joy of the festival to Miri but also provides a joyful reunion for those returning home for the New Year. It attracts countless locals and tourists, offers business opportunities for vendors, and injects new vitality into Miri's tourism industry.
“The GongXi Bazaar is also an important platform for cultural preservation and exchange. We can taste the most authentic Sarawak cuisine and innovative and unique specialty foods here. Visitors can also enjoy traditional performances such as lion dancing, among other fascinating cultural displays. Every corner of this festival exudes the rich and diverse cultural charm of Sarawak. Therefore, I hope and firmly believe that the Miri Colorful Market will continue to grow and become an internationally renowned annual event. It will bring greater visibility to Miri and attract people from all over the world to experience this unique festive atmosphere. This is not only the collective wish of the people of Miri but also the best representation of our cultural confidence.”
Additionally, Co-chairman Vincent Lu expressed in his speech that as we gather here, we feel the rich culture, diversity, and spirit of unity of the city of Miri, which collectively form our beloved home. The Colorful Market is no longer just an event; it symbolizes the strength, resilience, and spirit of our community. To promote harmony among various ethnic groups, 40% of the 300 stalls are specially allocated for the participation of our indigenous compatriots.
He said this year marks a milestone year for the 21st edition of the market organized by the Chamber and also an important celebration of the Chamber's 100th anniversary. Originating in 2000, the Miri Colorful Market was co-founded by the first Mayor of Miri City Council, Dato' Huang Han Wen, and the then-president of the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dato' Chen Fu Yuan. Thanks to their foresight, this event has developed into a beloved annual festival. Held a week before the Lunar New Year each year, this vibrant celebration transforms the city of Miri into a festive paradise filled with joy. This not only highlights the Chamber's long-term dedication and commitment to the Miri community but also reflects our positive impact in promoting cultural exchange, driving economic growth, and enhancing social cohesion.
“I extend my sincerest gratitude to all esteemed guests, sponsors, and partners whose steadfast support is a critical factor in making this event possible. Special thanks to our guest of honor, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim, and the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism for their continuous encouragement and assistance.”
He also said, “I also wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to the working committee, Miri City Council, RELA, the police, the fire brigade, the Miri Red Crescent Center, and all performance organizations for their tireless efforts and dedication to ensuring the success of this event. Your hard work and commitment have made a positive impact, and we are grateful for your valuable contributions.”
The aforementioned market commenced on the 18th of this month, operating from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight and will continue until the 28th (Tuesday) of this month, lasting a total of 11 days and 10 nights.
