Taiwan’s official authorities stated that the United States, at the Xi-Trump meeting held on Thursday, reaffirmed its clear and firm support for Taiwan.
This was stated by Taiwan Executive Yuan spokesperson Li Huizhi.
US President Trump, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, visited China from Wednesday to Friday (May 13 to 15). On Thursday morning, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Trump and his delegation outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Afterwards, the two held talks in the Great Hall.
During the meeting with Trump, Xi Jinping emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-US relations. If handled well, the two countries’ relations can remain generally stable. If handled poorly, the two countries may collide or even conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a very dangerous situation.
Xi Jinping pointed out that “Taiwan independence” and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible. Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the US.
