( Bandar Seri Begawan, 5th) Thailand's Ambassador to Brunei, Busaran Ganchanalai, stated that friendship ties were established 40 years ago between the Sultan of Brunei and the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The ambassador remarked that in April this year, His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei, accompanied by Prince Mateen, visited Thailand, particularly meeting with King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida, which showcased the close friendship between members of the royal families of both countries.
The ambassador made these remarks at a reception celebrating the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday, Thailand's National Day, Father's Day, and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Brunei.
The celebration was held at the Royal Polo Club Grand Hall, with the Minister of Development, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar and his wife invited to attend as the main guest.
The ambassador stated that the bilateral meetings between His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei and the Prime Minister of Thailand injected new momentum into the relationship between the two countries and laid out cooperation plans for the coming decades. The most concrete result was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Thailand's Government Pension Fund and Brunei Investment Agency, as well as a tourism cooperation MoU between Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Brunei's Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
The ambassador emphasized that other cooperation areas discussed at the meeting, such as the halal industry, food, and energy security, are also being discussed by relevant agencies. In June, the Joint Working Group on Agricultural Cooperation completed six cooperation projects in livestock, sustainable agriculture, water resource management, and aquaculture. In August, we also welcomed senior officials from Thailand's Ministry of Industry and Thai entrepreneurs to promote cooperation in halal food and the halal industry.
“Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin held a productive bilateral meeting with His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei during the recent Vientiane ASEAN Summit. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to enhancing food security and investment cooperation.”
The ambassador revealed that next year we look forward to holding the Bilateral Joint Cooperation Committee (JCBC) meeting in Brunei, with discussions expected on strengthening extensive areas of cooperation and promoting commercial exchanges in the private sector.
The ambassador expressed welcome for the recent long-term agreement signed between Thailand's PTT International Trading and BLNG, which will help provide more energy to Thailand starting next year, and both countries will continue to strengthen strong cooperation fields.
The ambassador said that in military and defense matters, our two countries conduct regular high-level visits and meetings. Thailand is proud to participate annually in activities marking the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Day, especially this year’s unity jump.
In addition, in March this year, a historic visit was made by three large vessels of the Royal Thai Navy carrying over 800 officers, conducting training and friendly visits.
It is also pleasing to see that the governments of both countries and prestigious universities have sponsored more scholarships and exchange programs. This year, the Thai Embassy also established a ‘Thailand Corner’ at the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) to promote people-to-people connections, facilitate knowledge exchange, and foster cross-cultural understanding, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the ASEAN community.
