Brunei Joint Law Enforcement Inspects Discount Sales: Measurement and Pricing in Compliance with Regulations

Published at Dec 31, 2025 01:51 pm
(Bandar Seri Begawan, 31st) The Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) under Brunei's Ministry of Finance and Economy, through its Measurement and Weights Unit (SDT), recently collaborated with the Consumer Affairs Division of the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) to carry out a joint enforcement operation at The Mall in Gadong, inspecting businesses participating in the 2025 'Brunei Salebration' (BSb) promotion.

This joint operation was conducted in December, focusing on the use of measurement tools and the labeling of product prices during the promotional period to ensure compliance with legal provisions. The enforcement results showed that SDT inspected a total of 23 measuring instruments used for commercial purposes, all of which complied with the Weights and Measures Act Chapter 151 (1983) and the Weighing and Measuring Instruments Inspection Regulations Section 3(1) & (2) (1994). All instruments were found to be accurate, legal, and properly registered.

On the other hand, JPES confirmed during the inspections that all BSb 2025 participating businesses had clearly and accurately labeled product prices, in compliance with the Price Control Act Chapter 142, under the Cheap Sale Regulations and the Product Price Labeling Order. Authorities also reminded merchants to display terms and conditions of sales transparently to enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy further called on consumers to pay attention to whether the measuring tools used when shopping have a valid registration label, to ensure the instrument has been certified by SDT and is suitable for weight, volume, length, and width readings.

In addition, authorities reminded businesses to uphold ethical and reasonable sales practices, and during law enforcement inspections, to ensure that clear price lists and discount information are available in-stores in accordance with Article 11(a) & (b) of the Cheap Sale Regulations, in order to protect consumer rights.
