(Kuching, Dec 17) Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, emphasized that regional cooperation and active community participation are key factors in promoting urban sustainable development. Especially during the transformation process, the collective strength of citizens is crucial.
He stated that South Kuching City will initiate a smart city management project inspired by this conference to ensure that South Kuching becomes an inclusive, resilient, and vibrant city.
During the Urban Innovators Dialogue meeting recently in Penang, Dato' Huang Hongsheng shared the challenges and opportunities of South Kuching City and expressed that he was inspired by other city mayors, particularly Kuala Lumpur Mayor Maimunah’s vision of a 'lovable city'.
He agreed with Mayor Maimunah's emphasis on a sense of belonging and community pride, believing that empathy and care are key factors for successful city management.
He disclosed, the Mayor of Yala City, Thailand, introduced the experience of enhancing community interaction through digital technology, while the Mayor of Penang shared policies and measures to address climate change.
“The development of a city does not rely solely on leaders but requires the joint participation of all citizens, promoting urban development and prosperity through collective effort.”
He said that through the conference, it also demonstrated his firm determination to steer South Kuching City towards smart and sustainable development and called for Malaysian cities to strengthen cooperation to jointly address the challenges of urban development.
