Sarawak and Japan Strengthen Cooperation in Natural Resource Development, Premier: Will Utilize Japan's Advanced Technology

(Kuching, Dec 17) The Sarawak government, Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) held a meeting yesterday to enhance bilateral cooperation in natural resource development and economic growth.

According to a press statement from Pertama Ferroalloys, the meeting focused on leveraging Japan’s advanced technology to support Sarawak’s industries and achieve sustainable development goals.

The meeting was attended by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and METI Japan representatives Yuzo Yamaguchi and Sarina Kishi.

During the meeting, Pertama Ferroalloys introduced the Green Triple Nine Manganese Initiative as part of the company’s Phase Two operations.

This initiative focuses on the production of Electrolytic Manganese Metal (EMM) and High Purity Manganese Sulphate (HPMnS), two globally recognized critical mineral resources.

“These high-purity products, with manganese content of 99.9%, are essential for advanced steelmaking and electric vehicle battery production,” the statement said.

Premier Abang Johari commended the initiative, stating that it aligns with green technology and Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PDS2030).

He also highlighted Pertama Ferroalloys’ potential contributions to renewable energy solutions, such as solar energy storage.

In the same statement, Pertama Ferroalloys CEO Hirotaka expressed pride in the company’s role as a bridge between Japan and Sarawak, fostering knowledge exchange and advancing the economic aspirations of both regions.

Additionally, Yuki reaffirmed the company’s commitment to introducing Japan’s advanced environmental management technologies to Sarawak, ensuring alignment with the state’s sustainable development strategies.

METI Japan reiterated its support for Sarawak’s industrial ambitions through technology transfers and budget provisions to secure critical mineral resources.
