Indonesia's Rice Production Soars, Hopes to Stop Imports and Export to Neighboring Countries

(Jakarta, 10th) Thanks to the abundant rainfall during this year's rainy season, Indonesia's rice production has significantly increased, and it is expected to achieve the goal of stopping rice imports for the first time in decades.

According to Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Sudaryanto, on May 7 (Wednesday), the national rice production in the first quarter of 2024 reached 8.61 million tons, a 53% increase compared to the same period last year. As the dry season from May to July approaches, authorities will continue to implement measures to increase production, and rice output is expected to further exceed the original target.

Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics predicts that rice production will grow by 11% in the first half of this year, and the annual output is expected to reach 33.8 million tons, higher than the original target of 32.8 million tons for this year.

Moreover, Indonesia's national rice stock has significantly increased from 1.7 million tons in January to over 4 million tons in May. Sudaryanto pointed out that with adequate stock, Indonesia may not only no longer need imports but could even have the capacity to export rice. Currently, Malaysia and the Philippines have expressed interest in purchasing Indonesian rice, and Indonesia is preparing to export about 1,000 tons of rice to Sabah and Sarawak.

Since President Prabowo took office last October, the Indonesian government has been vigorously promoting food self-sufficiency policies. Indonesia has a population of about 280 million, with an annual rice consumption of 30 million tons, and has long relied on imports since the 1960s. The increase in rice production may become an important milestone in Indonesia's food security policy.
